Advertisements
Advertisements are all around us from TV to billboards we all take them in everyday. As future teachers we will need to be able to analyze advertisements and have techniques for analyzing in our back pocket so we are able to use them when teaching about media to students.
One easy way of analyzing advertisements is brought to light by Frank Baker. According to Baker, when we are looking at advertisements you need to focus on the 5 Ps.
The 5 Ps are:
1. Product: What is the product being advertised?
2. Purchaser: Who is the intended purchaser that the advertisement is directed to?
3. Pitch: What persuasive techniques are applied to the pitch?
4. Placed: Where is the pitch placed?
5. Presented: How is the product presented?
When looking at advertisements these Ps will help in understanding as well as analyzing the advertisements we see.
Why this matters
As teachers advertisements is something we will need to teach our students about. Media literacy is a popular topic in schools now and understanding and being able to analyze advertisements is apart of this. Students are bombarded with Ads all the time and as technology increases this will not change. Frank Baker’s technique is just one easy way to show students how to analyze technology.
In our media literacy class we were given options when looking at different types of advertisements. I chose to make a magazine cover. This activity is one that would be fun for students to do and it would help them to understand how magazines catch and keep our attention. Here is my creation:
I was also able to take a test to tell me about my beliefs when it comes to the importance of teaching media literacy. The test is from the link listed below

This test was an easy way for me to see my beliefs when it comes to teaching media literacy. This is a great asset for teachers as well as future teachers because the test asks questions that you may not have thought of when it comes to media literacy. Here are my results. Enjoy :)
